This New Neighborhood Will Grow Its Own Food, Power Itself, And Handle Its Own Waste

This New Neighborhood Will Grow Its Own Food, Power Itself, And Handle Its Own Waste

If you live inside one of the houses in a new neighborhood being built in an Amsterdam suburb, your dining room might be next to an indoor vegetable garden. Outside, you’ll have another seasonal garden. And down the street, almost everything you eat will be grown in high-tech vertical farms.

The neighborhood will be the first ReGen Village, a new type of community designed to be fully self-sufficient, growing its own food, making its own energy, and handling its own waste in a closed loop.

Any household waste that can be composted will feed livestock or soldier flies. The soldier flies will feed fish, and fish waste will fertilize an aquaculture system that produces fruit and vegetables for the homes. Seasonal gardens will be fertilized by waste from the livestock.

By using the most advanced methods for growing food—a combination of aeroponics, aquaponics, permaculture, food forests, and high-yield organic farming—the neighborhood will grow many times more food than a traditional farm of the same size, with fewer resources. Aquaponics, for example, can produce 10 times as much produce on the same amount of land, with 90% less water.

“We anticipate literally tons of abundant organic food every year—from vegetables, fruit, nuts, legumes, fish, eggs, chicken, small animal dairy and protein—that can continually grow and yield in the vertical garden systems all year long as supplement to the seasonal gardens and farming adjacent,” says James Ehrlich, CEO of ReGen Villages, the California-based developer, which will also manage the neighborhood-slash-farm. The company partnered with Effekt, a Danish architecture firm, on the design.

The community will also produce its own energy, using a mixture of geothermal, solar, solar thermal, wind, and biomass. “We’re looking at some very interesting technologies for small-footprint biomass that can take surrounding farm waste and turn that into a consistent energy source in a way that can power these communities in northern Europe even in the dead of winter,” Ehrlich says. A smart grid will distribute power efficiently, sending it to a carport to charge shared electric cars as needed.

A biogas plant will turn any non-compostable household waste into power and water. A water storage system will collect rainwater and graywater and redistribute it to seasonal gardens and the aquaponic system.

It’s the first of a network of similar communities that ReGen plans to build around the world.

“We’re really looking at a global scale,” he says. “We are redefining residential real-estate development by creating these regenerative neighborhoods, looking at first these greenfield pieces of farmland where we can produce more organic food, more clean water, more clean energy, and mitigate more waste than if we just left that land to grow organic food or do permaculture there.”

The first 100-home village is on the outskirts of Almere, a quickly growing town 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam. Inside Almere, the company is also building a scaled-down version with 35 condo units. The company also has more projects planned in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Germany, but plans to expand everywhere.

“We’re really looking at starting off as the Tesla of eco-villages,” Ehrlich says. “That’s the idea. So we’re coming out as a little bit higher-end for Northern Europe.” Next, the company wants to adapt the system for arid climates such as the Middle East.

“We tackle the first two hardest climate areas,” he says. “Then from there we have global scale—rural India, sub-Saharan Africa, where we know that the population is going to increase and also be moving to the middle class. If everybody in India and Africa wants the same kind of suburbs that we’ve been building so far, the planet’s not going to make it.”

Ehrlich, who also works as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Stanford University and as a senior technologist there, was inspired by a 2013 UN report that argued for the creation of self-sufficient communities.

In Almere, the village is likely to grow about half of the food that the community eats—it won’t grow coffee or bananas, for example. It will also feed energy back to the local grid. But in some locations, the company believes that the neighborhood could be fully self-sufficient.

The community in Almere will break ground this summer and be completed in 2017.

Why The Italian food is the BEST!

WE LOVE  SPAGHETTI, PIZZA AND CAFFE’

Italian cuisine (Italian: cucina italiana [kuˈtʃiːna itaˈljaːna]) has developed through centuries of social and political changes, with roots stretching to antiquity.2016-05-20 17.04.54_resized

Significant changes occurred with the discovery of the New World and the introduction of potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers and maize, now central to the cuisine but not introduced in quantity until the 18th century.

2016-05-19 22.05.39_resized_2Italian cuisine is noted for its regional diversity, abundance of difference in taste, and it is probably the most popular in the world, with influences abroad.

Italian cuisine is characterized by its simplicity, with many dishes having only four to eight ingredients.

2016-05-19 22.07.30_resized_2 Italian cooks rely chiefly on the quality of the ingredients rather than on elaborate preparation. Ingredients and dishes vary by region. Many dishes that were once regional, however, have proliferated with variations throughout the country.

Cheese and wine are a major part of the cuisine, with many variations and Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) (regulated appellation) laws. Coffee, specifically espresso, has become important in Italian cuisine.2016-05-19 22.00.43_resized

As much as we love our spaghetti & meatballs and fettucini Alfredo, we would gladly give them up for an authentic meal in Italy any day. This hot-blooded country serves up plate after plate of simple, well-rounded pasta dishes.

2016-05-18 19.29.21_resizedThey are masters with the eggplant. And they have blessed us all with the greatest way to use lady fingers: tiramisu. But it’s not just the actual food that makes Italy a food-lover’s paradise. It’s the way they think about their food that sets them apart from the rest.

2016-05-21 11.11.05

In Italy, the coffee is hot and to the point, the mozzarella is fresh and the people eat with gusto. Clearly, Italians are just better at life than the rest of us. And that’s just the short list. Read on for the 15 reasons that the rest of us should take notes on how to live from the Italians — or why we should all just up and move to Italy.

1 They Put Ice Cream IN Their Coffee

It’s like adding cream and sugar, but a lot more fun. This beautiful coffee drink is called an affogato.

It’s a way of life.

3 They Created Burrata

It’s like buffalo mozzarella, only SO MUCH BETTER because it has the wonderful addition of cream.

4 Olive Oil Runs Through Their Veins

The average Italian consumes about 14 liters of olive oil a year.

5 They Don’t Mess Around With Freeze-Dried Parmesean

They use the real deal, and they make it in these enormous wheels.

6 They Put Their Leftover Risotto To Good Use

They shape it into a ball, stuff it with ragu, bread it and throw it in the deep fryer. It’s called arancini and it’s almost better than risotto. We commend them for their resourcefulness and respect their ability to fry just about anything.

7 Spending 3-4 Hours To Make A Ragu Is A Totally Respectable Way To Spend Your Time

They have their priorities straight.

8 All Pizzas Are Personal Pizzas

Which means you don’t have to share — ever.

9 Eating Multiple Courses Is The Norm

Why settle for one course when you can have three? While this tradition is fizzling out, Italians were known for their long elaborate lunches consisting of apertif, antipasto, first plate, second plate, salad, cheese, dessert, coffee and a digestif. It still happens on special occasions and should be experienced at least once in your lifetime.

10 Their Wine Flows Like The Mississippi

Since Italy is the NUMBER ONE producer of wine in the world, it’s only natural that they aren’t stingy with it.

11 In Italy, It’s Customary For People To Want To Feed You

It’s a way express courtesy, and you should always say yes. Not to be nice, but because if you refuse you’ll be missing out on the best meal of your life.

12 GELATO!

With a history dating back four centuries, it’s no wonder that Italian gelato is so masterfully created.

13 They Understand The Greatness Of Artichokes

Not only do they fry them beautifully, but they’ve turned them into an liqueur known as Cynar that is enjoyed as a digestif aperitif.

14 This Is Breakfast

Italians don’t eat a big meal for breakfast. They usually have a cappuccino with a sweet pastry. While that might not sound like a great thing to all of you out there who want your eggs with bacon and toast in the morning, it is, and we’ll tell you why: it means you have a lot more room for a multi-course lunch.

JAMIE OLIVER NEEDS YOUR HELP FIGHTING FOR FOOD EDUCATION #FoodRevolutionDay

Our Blog today want share a big project from Jamie Oliver

Jamie need your help, please share as you can

Thanks J.W.B Blog Staff

Hi guys, Jamie here.

I urgently need your help to make a real difference. We’re currently facing a global obesity epidemic, with 42 million children under the age of five either overweight or obese across the world. The bottom line is the next generation will live shorter lives than their parents if nothing is done to rectify these alarming stats.

So I’m asking that you do two simple things – first, please sign this petition to show your support for compulsory practical food education in schools across the world, then, most importantly, share it via your social networks.

It’s essential that we arm future generations with the life skills they urgently need in order to lead healthier, happier, more productive lives. I passionately believe this is every child’s human right and I hope you agree.

If you can help me get millions of people to sign this petition, we can create a movement powerful enough to force all G20 governments to take action. Food education will make a difference to the lives of the next generations, so please help. I can’t do it without you.

Sign it, share it and let’s inspire governments to do the right thing.

Big love

Why the G20?

The G20 comprises of 19 countries plus the European Union. It is the premier forum for it’s members’ international economic cooperation and decision-making. The G20 is an international forum for global cooperation in today’s world. Its response to the global financial crisis is a testament to the impact G20 members can make when working together. With the world now free from immediate economic crisis, the G20 is increasingly shifting its attention to driving practical actions that will lead to sustained global growth.

Obesity is one of the three biggest social burdens created by human beings alongside smoking, and armed violence, war,  and terrorism. Obesity costs $2trillion dollars globally each year. The G20 has a vested interest in addressing this burden and the tools to realise the solutions, making it the ideal target for this petition.

Detox diet is one of the most common diet that can help to clean your body and your mind. I select some of the best juice that I personally tried for you in several years of experience.

Juice fasting, also known as juice cleansing, is a controversial fasting method and a detox diet in which a person consumes only fruit and vegetable juices to obtain nutrition while otherwise abstaining from food consumption. Juice fasts may last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. The juice consumed during a juice fast is not the type commercially available, but rather that produced from freshly juiced fruits and vegetables

  • Cucumbers and celery are natural diuretics.
  • Beets are great for liver cleansing.
  • Lemons, ginger and apples aid in cleansing the entire body.
  • Cranberries are good for cleansing the bladder.
  • Greens nourish our cells and clean them at the same time.
  • Dandelion greens are especially good for cleaning the liver.

Criticisms

Because of the low sodium content of most fruits and vegetables, salt deficiency may occur. Salt deficiency causes headaches and weakness, then light-headedness, then nausea.

As a detox diet

Doing a juice cleanse has been said to help unleash the natural healing power of your body by ridding built up toxins

Fasters should take care to maintain their intake of vitamins and nutrients during fasting, though no specific side effects are associated exclusively with juice fasting. Juice mixes containing grapefruit juice may also adversely interact with certain prescription drugs

Preparation of Papaya leaf juice for curing dengue fever

It’s very important to call doctor first

Carica papaya Leaves Juice Significantly Accelerates the Rate of Increase in Platelet Count among Patients with Dengue Fever and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever

The study was conducted to investigate the platelet increasing property of Carica papaya leaves juice (CPLJ) in patients with dengue fever (DF). An open labeled randomized controlled trial was carried out on 228 patients with DF and dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF). Approximately half the patients received the juice, for 3 consecutive days while the others remained as controls and received the standard management. Their full blood count was monitored 8 hours for 48 hours. Gene expression studies were conducted on the ALOX 12 and PTAFR genes. The mean increase in platelet counts were compared in both groups using repeated measure ANCOVA. There was a significant increase in mean platelet count observed in the intervention group ( ) but not in the control group 40 hours since the first dose of CPLJ. Comparison of mean platelet count between intervention and control group showed that mean platelet count in intervention group was significantly higher than control group after 40 and 48 hours of admission ( ). The ALOX 12 (FC  =  15.00) and PTAFR (FC  =  13.42) genes were highly expressed among those on the juice. It was concluded that CPLJ does significantly increase the platelet count in patients with DF and DHF.

Treatment for Dengue Fever

There is no specific medicine to treat dengue infection. If you think you may have dengue fever, you should use pain relievers with acetaminophen and avoid medicines with aspirin, which could worsen bleeding. You should also rest, drink plenty of fluids, and see your doctor. If you start to feel worse in the first 24 hours after your fever goes down, you should get to a hospital immediately to be checked for complications.

What is this?

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms typically begin three to fourteen days after infection. This may include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash. Recovery generally takes less than two to seven days. In a small proportion of cases, the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs.untitled

Dengue is spread by several species of mosquito of the Aedes type, principally A. aegypti. The virus has five different types; infection with one type usually gives lifelong immunity to that type, but only short-term immunity to the others. Subsequent infection with a different type increases the risk of severe complications. A number of tests are available to confirm the diagnosis including detecting antibodies to the virus or its RNA.

A novel vaccine for dengue fever has been approved in three countries, but it is not yet commercially available. Prevention is by reducing mosquito habitat and limiting exposure to bites. This may be done by getting rid of or covering standing water and wearing clothing that covers much of the body. Treatment of acute dengue is supportive and includes giving fluid either by mouth or intravenously for mild or moderate disease. For more severe cases blood transfusion may be required. About half a million people require admission to hospital a year. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen should not be used.gfh

Dengue has become a global problem since the Second World War and is common in more than 110 countries. Each year between 50 and 528 million people are infected and approximately 10,000 to 20,000 die. The earliest descriptions of an outbreak date from 1779. Its viral cause and spread were understood by the early 20th century.

Apart from eliminating the mosquitoes, work is ongoing for medication targeted directly at the virus.

imagesTo protect yourself:

  • Stay away from heavily populated residential areas, if possible.
  • Use mosquito repellents, even indoors.
  • When outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants tucked into socks.
  • When indoors, use air conditioning if available.
  • Make sure window and door screens are secure and free of holes. If sleeping areas are not screened or air conditioned, use mosquito nets.
  • If you have symptoms of dengue, speak to your doctor.

To reduce the mosquito population, get rid of places where mosquitoes can breed. These include old tires, cans, or flower pots that collect rain. Regularly change the water in outdoor bird baths and pets’ water dishes.

If someone in your home gets dengue fever, be especially vigilant about efforts to protect yourself and other family members from mosquitoes. Mosquitoes that bite the infected family member could spread the infection to others in your home.

Ci sarebbero tante proprietà salutari e curative associate all’olio di cocco e ulteriori ricerche potrebbero mettere in luce altre possibili applicazioni.

Cardamomo in cucina

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): When symptoms of reflux become bothersome or occur frequently, they’re called GERD. Infrequently, GERD can cause serious problems of the esophagus.
  • Dyspepsia: Another name for stomach upset or indigestion. Dyspepsia may be caused by almost any benign or serious condition that affects the stomach.
  • Gastric ulcer (stomach ulcer): An erosion in the lining of the stomach, often causing pain and/or bleeding. Gastric ulcers are most often caused by NSAIDs or H. pylori infection.
  • Peptic ulcer disease: Doctors consider ulcers in either the stomach or the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) peptic ulcer disease.
  • Gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach, often causing nausea and/or pain. Gastritis can be caused by alcohol, certain medications, H. pylori infection, or other factors.

  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES): One or more tumors that secrete hormones that lead to increased acid production. Severe GERD and peptic ulcer disease result from this rare disorder.
  • Gastric varices: In people with severe liver disease, veins in the stomach may swell and bulge under increased pressure. Called varices, these veins are at high risk for bleeding, although less so than esophageal varices are.
  • Stomach bleeding: Gastritis, ulcers, or gastric cancers may bleed. Seeing blood or black material in vomit or stool is usually a medical emergency.
  • Gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying): Nerve damage from diabetes or other conditions may impair the stomach’s muscle contractions. Nausea and vomiting are the usual symptoms.
